Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our German Studies program

What are the admission requirements for the German Studies program?

Admission requires a high school diploma with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (Bulgarian system) or equivalent. Prior German language knowledge is beneficial but not mandatory for beginners' programs. Students must pass an entrance examination that includes language aptitude testing and a general interview. Transfer students and those with existing German language certifications (Goethe-Institut, TestDaF) may receive advanced placement.

How long does it take to complete the Bachelor's degree?

The Bachelor's degree in German Studies is a 4-year program (8 semesters) with 240 ECTS credits. This includes comprehensive language training, literature and cultural studies, linguistics, and practical application. Students can also pursue a minor in German Studies alongside another major, which typically requires 2-3 years depending on the program structure.

Are there opportunities to study in Germany?

Yes! We offer multiple exchange programs with partner universities in Munich, Berlin, Heidelberg, and other German cities through the Erasmus+ program and bilateral agreements. Students can spend one or two semesters abroad, typically in their third or fourth year. We also organize short-term study trips, summer language courses, and internship placements with German companies. Scholarship opportunities are available through DAAD and other organizations.

What career opportunities are available after graduation?

Graduates pursue diverse careers including: translation and interpretation, teaching German language, international business and trade, tourism and hospitality, diplomatic services, cultural mediation, publishing and media, EU institutions, and research positions. Many graduates also continue to Master's and PhD programs in Germany or Austria. The demand for German language specialists remains high in Bulgaria and internationally.

Do I need to know German before applying?

No prior German knowledge is required for our beginner-level Bachelor's program. We offer intensive German language courses starting from A1 level. However, students with existing German knowledge (A2-B1) can join advanced groups and progress faster. We recommend starting German language preparation before university if possible, as it allows you to engage more deeply with literature and cultural studies earlier in your program.

What certifications can I obtain during my studies?

Students are prepared for internationally recognized German language examinations including Goethe-Zertifikat (A1-C2), TestDaF, and ÖSD certificates. Our curriculum aligns with CEFR standards, and we offer specialized exam preparation courses. Many students achieve B2-C1 level proficiency by graduation. These certifications are essential for studying or working in German-speaking countries and are recognized globally by employers and universities.

What makes your German Studies program unique?

Our program combines rigorous language training with cultural immersion through our partnerships with German universities and cultural institutions. We have native German-speaking faculty, modern language laboratories, extensive study abroad opportunities, and strong connections with German companies for internships. Small class sizes ensure personalized attention, and our curriculum emphasizes both classical and contemporary German culture. We also host regular cultural events, film screenings, and guest lectures from German academics and writers.
